Excuse me, Senator Thompson, but . . .

Aug 8th, 2007 | By | Category: General

Would-be presidential candidate, one-time Senator and long-time actor, Fred Thompson has updated his web site. Problem is, his staffers are calling his video feed ‘FredCast.’

Um, no matter what my political leanings are, I just don’t think that’s cool or kosher. After all, with what is perhaps the single most popular independent cycling podcast on the planet, I can’t have someone (not even a presidential candidate) using my well-earned trademark.

So . . . are there any attorneys among you who might be willing to write the ‘I’m With Fred’ folks a nice cease-and-desist on behalf of little old me? If so, please send me an email and we can chat.

I’m serious about this, by the way.

Oh! And while we’re on the subject, this guy has decided to contact me again. He says that he no longer wants to use his domain name and is willing to ‘let it go’ for a mere $1,200.

Isn’t that sweet of him?

  2. I sent them a note on their website feedback form mentioning their poor judgment for not googling the phrase before they chose it.
Their site feedback form is located here:

    Aloha,

  3. David,

You should buy him one of these:

    David.

  4. I hammered them on ther feedback site too.

  5. You’re using the well-known and used term in cycling to promote your website. What would happen if the guy that first used the term somewhere told you to stop using the term? What about when a cyclist uses the term “fred” on his/her website to sell “fredshirts” or “fredsocks” or “freddys” or whatever – are you going to tell them to stop it because it’s your word?

I’m not siding with any one side but if *you* did your homework you’d probably have registered your company, trademarked your name, etc. so that you could enforce it if needed.

  6. The term I am upset about isn’t Fred. It isn’t FredSocks, or FredShirts or Fred Flintstone. It is FredCast. A term specifically used for a podcast and one which I’ve used for two years.

And by the way, three comments within 15 minutes all from the same person at the same IP address isn’t cool. If you have something to say, once is enough.

  7. Cycling Podcast v. Presidential Candidate…

Well-known cycling podcaster David from The FredCast finds himself with some unwanted competition from a presidential candidate who wants to use his podcast’s name without permission….
