Pedaling a New Path: The FredCast Rides onto YouTube

Follow along on the new adventures of David from The FredCast on YouTube!

David from The FredCast cycling at the Grand Canyon
That’s me on a ride at the Grand Canyon last year.

Hey there, FredCast family! It’s David, your old cycling podcast host, and I’ve got some exciting news to share. First, let me address the elephant in the room – yes, it’s been a while since The FredCast graced your earbuds. I know I promised to return, and life had other plans. But here’s the thing: while the podcast may have gone quiet, my passion for adventure never did. It just… shifted gears.

So, what’s new? Well, everything!

We’re documenting this grand adventure on our new YouTube channel: Destinations, Dents, and Discoveries. Our tagline? “This is how WE RV.” And let me tell you, it’s been quite the ride already!

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “David, what about cycling?” Don’t worry, fellow Freds – cycling is still a HUGE part of my life, so while our channel focuses on RV living and travel, you can bet there will be two-wheeled content mixed in. After all, you can take the Fred out of the podcast, but you can’t take the Fred out me!

My wife Donna and I, along with our 100lb Labrador co-pilot Doug, have embarked on the journey of a lifetime. We’ve swapped our traditional home for a life on wheels, specifically an Airstream Flying Cloud travel trailer. Our mission? To visit every US state, every U.S. National Park, and most Canadian provinces. It’s ambitious, it’s exciting, and it’s a little bit crazy – just like attempting a century ride for the first time!

Here’s what you can expect from Destinations, Dents, and Discoveries:

  1. Real, unfiltered experiences of full-time RV living
  2. Breathtaking views from coast to coast (and beyond!)
  3. Practical tips and how-tos for aspiring RVers and anyone who loves to travel and enjoy the great outdoors
  4. The occasional cycling adventure (because some habits die hard)
  5. A healthy dose of humor, humility, and the unexpected

We’re just getting started, with three episodes already available and plans to release new content weekly. Right now, we’re on an epic journey from SoCal to Alaska and back. Talk about a change of scenery from my old studio setups in L.A. and Park City!

David, Donna, and Doug at a Canadian National Park
Here we are at Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada, just a few weeks ago.

As I sit here, typing this post from Talkeetna, Alaska, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible journey that led us here. The FredCast and The Spokesmen weren’t just podcasts – they were communities. Each of you, whether we met in person or connected through emails, tweets, or FredCast schwag orders, played a part in shaping that community. Your names bring smiles to my face and, I’ll admit, sometimes tears to my eyes.

Even if RV life isn’t your thing, I want you to know how much you all still mean to me. The support, friendship, and sense of belonging we created together have left an indelible mark on my life. It’s that same spirit of community and adventure that Donna and I are carrying forward into this new chapter.

So, here’s my invitation to you: Come along for the ride! Check out Destinations, Dents, and Discoveries on YouTube. Watch, like, subscribe, and if you’re feeling generous, share it with friends who might enjoy our adventures. We’d love to have you with us as we navigate this new path – bumps, discoveries, and all.

Thank you for being part of The FredCast family. Your support meant the world to me then, and it means just as much now as we embark on this new adventure.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that life is full of unexpected turns. Sometimes, those turns lead you to the most beautiful destinations. Here’s to new roads and the joy of discovery!

And as always, enjoy the ride!

David (and Donna, and Doug!)

P.S. You can also follow our adventures on Instagram, where we are currently known as @AlDentyAdventures (Al for the aluminum of the Airstream and Denty because, well, dents happen!)

The FredCast is returning to the Internet in 2024!

Hi, fans and supporters of The FredCast. I am overjoyed to announce that, after a hiatus in FredCasts, there is a plan to return to a regular production schedule in late 2024! Details are still being worked out including format, frequency, and topics, but rest assured that we will bring you the same (nay, better!) level of professionalism, enthusiasm, fairness, and content that you’ve come to expect, respect, and demand. Stay tuned for more details very soon!!

JensonUSA Bar Shot Contest!

JensonUSA and The FredCast are having a contest to see who can take the best Bar Shot, and ten (10) winners will be chosen each of whom will receive a twenty dollar ($20) gift certificate to JensonUSA!

What’s a bar shot? An excellent question! A bar shot is a photograph you take from behind the handlebars of your bike, showing off the amazing trail, climb, path or location of the ride you’re on. Here are a couple of examples:

Now it’s your turn. Simply take a Bar Shot and tweet it out to the world and follow these rules:

  1. Your tweet must contain the hash tag: #barshot
  2. Your tweet must contain @JensonUSA and @FredCast
  3. Your tweet must contain your bar shot photo (duh!)
  4. Tell us where you took the shot and a little about the ride
  5. Send your tweet by 6pm PDT on Monday, May 7, 2012

Once the deadline has passed, JensonUSA will choose their ten favorite bar shots and I will announce the winners on the next episode of The FredCast. JensonUSA wants to keep you enjoying the path you’re on, so send us your bar shots and you could be a winner!

Survey Contest Winners

Thank you to everyone who participated in The FredCast 2012 Listener Survey. The response was tremendous and I’ll be using your responses and comments to make the show even better in 2012.

I know that many of you have been wondering whether or not you won anything in the contest, and I finally have the results. Here is the list of winners:

Congratulations to all the winners (I’ll email you all shortly for your addresses). And a huge THANK YOU to everyone who participated. I have more prizes in the closet, so stay tuned for more contests soon!

USA Pro Cycling Challenge Announcements

America’s Pro Cycling Competition Announces Broadcast Agreement with NBC Sports Group Featuring Live Coverage on NBC and VERSUS from August 22-28

Cycling Event Changes Name to USA Pro Cycling Challenge and Unveils a New Logo

April 5, 2011, Denver u2013 The USA Pro Cycling Challenge, formally known as the Quiznos Pro Challenge, today announced that it has entered into a television agreement with the NBC Sports Group to present 25 hours of cycling coverage over seven days.

NBC Sports will broadcast the final day of the inaugural seven-day professional cycling competition live on August 28, 2011. VERSUS, a member of the NBC Sports Group, will extensively cover the event with 3.5 hour broadcasts each day from August 22-28.

The event also announced the change of its name to USA Pro Cycling Challenge in order to showcase the global scale of the event to a worldwide audience. Quiznos will continue as a founding sponsor with the same level of participation in the event.

“There is no stronger television partner than the NBC Sports Group to present the USA Pro Cycling Challenge,” said Shawn Hunter, co-chairman of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. “With the NBC Sports Group’s extensive, 25 hours of live coverage, millions of fans will be able to follow their favorite cyclists as they compete in the most demanding professional bike race ever held in America.”

NBC will broadcast the USA Pro Cycling Challenge live for two hours on August 28, 2011, while VERSUS, the official home of the Tour de France in the US, will cover 30 minutes of pre-race coverage and one hour of post-race coverage in addition to live event coverage throughout the entire competition.

“Professional cycling is growing to be one of the largest and most compelling international sports to follow,” said Jon Miller, President of Programming of NBC and VERSUS. “Our goal is to give viewers unique access to the pageantry, drama, and extreme competition that will take place as many of the world’s top athletes compete to win the first USA Pro Cycling Challenge.”

USA Pro Cycling Challenge
Effective today, the official name of the international professional cycling competition is now the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. The event was initially titled the Quiznos Pro Challenge after the event’s founding partner, Quiznos. Quiznos will continue as a founding partner with the same level of involvement and participation.

“As the race continues to build momentum with teams and sponsors from across the globe, and as we significantly increase media coverage nationally and internationally, our new logo will brand the event in a way that better communicates the scale of the event and its audience,” said Rick Schaden, owner and co-chairman of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. “Our goal is to help raise the profile of professional cycling in the United States by hosting an epic race in Colorado that draws the top cyclists in the world and mirrors the excitement of the Tour de France.”

The event also has unveiled a new logo, website www.USAprocyclingchallenge.com and Twitter page @USAProChallenge.

About the USA Pro Cycling Challenge
The USA Pro Cycling Challenge is expected to be the largest spectator event in Colorado history and one of the largest sporting events to ever take place in the United States. For seven consecutive days, 128 of the world’s top athletes will race across nearly 600 miles through the majestic Rockies, reaching higher altitudes than they’ve ever had to endure, more than two miles in elevation. It’s the best of the best in professional cycling, competing on a challenging course through some of America’s most beautiful scenery, including cities such as Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge and Steamboat Springs.

As the interest in professional cycling continues to grow as a global sport, (which is evident by the addition of two new UCI-sanctioned races this year alone in Beijing and Quebec), it is fitting that the USA Pro Cycling Challenge comes along just in time to put a stake in the ground for the United States. The USA Pro Cycling Challenge is expected to be one of the biggest and best races worldwide… America’s answer to the Tour de France.

The inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge will take place August 22-28, 2011. With more than one million spectators expected at the event, as well as national television exposure on NBC and the cable network VERSUS, the USA Pro Cycling Challenge will be the race to celebrate in America.

Spectators of this race will see Olympians, World Champions and Tour de France competitors. Fans worldwide will have access to the competition and riders like never before with the most advanced, interactive online, smartphone and broadcast television experience presented to date in professional cycling.

Phil Keoghan & ‘The Ride’ Movie Near You

As I mentioned on the last episode of The FredCast, Phil Keoghan (host of The Amazing Race) will be screening his film, The Ride, in theaters around the United States in February.

The Ride is a 90 minute documentary of Phil’s ride across the United States in March of 2009. The ride took him 40 days and covered 3,500+ miles. Along the way, Phil not only put his mind and body to the test, he also raised more than $500,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He rode with fans, met people affected by MS, and inspired everyone with whom he came in contact.

The film has not yet been put into wide distribution, but it is going to screen in select cities around the U.S. for just one night in each city. Phil Keoghan will be at each event to introduce the film and meet attendees. This event leads up to the premiere of the next season of The Amazing Race.

Thanks to Regal Cinemas, all proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the National MS Society.

Here are the dates, cities and links to ticket purchasing via Fandango:

Ticket prices will range between $10 – $13 (depending upon location)

If you go, please say hi to Phil for me, and (you probably guessed this was coming), enjoy ‘The Ride.’

Podcast Awards Tonight!

Thanks to all of you, The FredCast was nominated for a 2010 Podcast Award (our third nomination in five years). I am honored, humbled and excited about this and sincerely appreciate your nominations and voted.

This evening at 8:00 PM EST, the Podcast Awards will be announced live via ustream. Please tune-in, cross your fingers and wish me luck!

Black Friday at JensonUSA

It’s Thanksgiving here in the U.S. and that can only mean one thing: shopping! The day after Thanksgiving has become known as Black Friday, not because of the recent release of the new Harry Potter movie, but because it is traditionally the first day of the year that retailers’ books are in the black.

Many brick-and-mortar retailers offer great discounts and deals on Black Friday, while online retailers offer their discounts on Cyber Monday (the Monday following Thanksgiving).

Our friends at JensonUSA just leaked the link to their Black Friday page showing all of the products that will be discounted. The prices shown are already low, but when you check out the site on Friday, I am told they will be even lower!

Meanwhile, JensonUSA also just leaked some amazing deals that begin now, include Black Friday, and go all the way through midnight on Cyber Monday. The deals are so good, that I just had to let you know about them. They include:

Happy Thanksgiving, and Happy Shopping!!

Help The FredCast End Multiple Sclerosis

The FredCast Family Riding in Bike MS

The FredCast Family Riding in Bike MS

Please donate and help us stop MS!

Please join our team and ride with us!

During the weekend of June 26-27, my family and I will be riding in the Bike MS ‘Harmon’s Best Dam Bike Ride’ event, benefitting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. We need your help!

Our family deals with the effects of multiple sclerosis every day. My wife, Donna, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis seven years ago and we desperately need to find the cause and cure for this awful disease. Please help us by donating to our cause or by joining our team and riding with us. We’d love to have you participate in any way you can, no matter how big or how small.

In case you haven’t seen it, here is a video that appears on Disney Channel, highlighting my daughters and why they ride for multiple sclerosis:

For more on why I ride and why I need your help, here is the letter I’ve sent to my friends and family asking for their support:

Dear Friends and Family,

As our family prepares to participate in this year’s Bike MS event the weekend of June 26-27, I’d once again like to ask for your support. But first, I’d like to ask you a couple of questions: Where were you in May and June of 2003? What were you doing? What do you remember?

Some recall President Bush giving his famous ‘Mission Accomplished’ speech. Others recall Martha Stewart’s federal indictment, Gilberto Simoni winning the Giro d’Italia, the San Antonio Spurs winning the NBA Finals, and the theatrical releases of The Matrix Reloaded, Finding Nemo, and the Italian Job.

I don’t remember any of that.

I remember a week of sightseeing in Manhattan and how Donna found it harder to walk as the days went on. I remember Meghan and Emily’s faces as they wondered why their mom couldn’t walk downstairs to breakfast. And I remember the doctor telling Donna that she had multiple sclerosis.

That was a terrible and pivotal time in our lives, but thanks to amazing advances in medicine, as well as Donna’s incredible attitude, she continues to do well. Unfortunately, we know too many others who aren’t, and that’s why we need your help.

Today, there is no cure for multiple sclerosis, and with diagnosis occurring most frequently between the ages of 20 and 50, many individuals face a lifetime filled with unpredictability.

I’ve seen the many ways The National Multiple Sclerosis Society uses funds collected from Bike MS events to not only support research for a cure tomorrow, but also to provide programs which address the needs of people living with MS today.

I choose to fight this disease by riding a bike. You can help me by donating whatever you can afford. Any amount, great or small, helps to make a difference in the lives of people with MS.

By clicking on this donation link, you can make a secure, tax-deductible donation in any amount. You can also send a check by postal mail to the address below (just put my name in the memo field of the check so it gets credited to my team). Please also feel free to forward this email to anyone you believe might be interested in joining our movement.

Together, we will help put an end to multiple sclerosis . . . and to bad memories.

Thank you for your support.
