Driver Suing Dead Cyclist

Jan 25th, 2008 | By | Category: News

As if yesterday’s story about the driver who laughed about killing a cyclist wasn’t enough, here’s today’s bit of unbelievable news: A Spanish driver is suing the family of a cyclist whom he hit and killed. To add insult to injury (literally), the driver said, “I’m also a victim in all of this, you can’t fix the lad’s problems, but you can fix mine.”

  1. I had seen this story earlier. Really, it’s unfortunate that the cyclist got killed, but, “The youth had been cycling alone at night without reflective clothing or a helmet, according to a police report cited by El Pais.” We could debate whether suing a dead guy is ethical or whether the driver’s “excessive speed” led to an otherwise avoidable accident, but riding in the dark without any lighting or reflective clothing is about as stupid as driving without your headlights on. You’re just asking for an accident. We should think twice about turning this into an “Us v. Motorists” debate.
