Creating Elevation Maps (mentioned on Show #19)

May 31st, 2006 | By | Category: General

Listener Neal sent in a great tutorial on creating elevation profile maps without the use of a GPS. The instructions are contained in Show #19 and its show notes. The accompanying tutorial files can be found in the following locations:

Screen Shots (showing how to set-up each of the programs mentioned in the tutorial)

Sample Google Earth (kmz) Files (these are the “before” files)

The Resulting Elevation Profiles (these are the “after” files)

Thanks, Neal!

  1. Neal, could you elaborate a bit on how to create the route. I’m trying to use Google Earth Plus using the Add Path option to make a route, but it does not appear to work when I save it as a KML file and follow the rest of the instructions.

  2. Paul,

Thanks for your ecomment. From other e-mails I have received it sounds like others are having the same problems. I haven’t actually installed the software and done this myself (shame on me, right?), so I will need to do so and find out where the problem lies. In the meantime, I will e-mail listener Neal and find out what he knows about the problem.

Thanks again. I will get back to you and the rest of the listeners very shortly with a fix.

    All the best.

    David
