Call me cynical, but just what is the link between Rich Wharton and Computrain?
I do hope he, and you, are on a good deal for the amount of advertising included in this ‘cast.. 😉
Yes, you’re cynical. I don’t have any connection to CompuTrainer and, to the best of my knowledge (although I will check), neither does Rich. He just believes in the technology as a training tool.
It’s sort of like the way I talk about Garmin, Mac and Colnago. I don’t get any money or product from these companies, but I use and believe in their products.
That’s not advertising. That a satisfied customer.
Dave,
Naw, don’t be cynical. Here’s the deal.
I’ve known them since ’95 when I bought my first CT, and they have had a VERY, LOW, TURNOVER in employees since then. And while I’m a big fan of CT’s, I’m also a critic – thus the book I wrote, which sort of became a manual with pictures to help frustrated CT owners everywhere. The result? They sold more units, I sold maybe a few more books (though that’s highly debatable, and it’s another discussion for another day, perhaps after a pint of DARK beer), and I did to a couple of trade shows for them. However, we haven’t done much together since ’05, and in ’06 Tim Becker left the company, so I just haven’t been in contact with them nearly as much.
That said, in a nutshell, the CT is a very powerful way to improve your performance, if you’re willing to put up with all its’ idiosyncracies, like stereo jacks, 9-pin converters, wonky software and the like. It’s an even MORE powerful tool with Paul’s software, and it’s even better now that MultiRider 3 is out and running.
Are they good guys? Sure. Are they aware of their shortcomings? Yeah, probably. Are they interested in improving the product? Sure….. But there’s some good competition coming up, so they know they need to step up a bit.
But honestly, I’m independent, we have a strong but not official or mutual relationship, and I see it as my job to promote the wattage wagon in as many ways as possible.
Just don’t ask me about my experiences with a certain Finn-based company, okay?
Regarding Cerevellum, I am going out of town for a while, but I plan to ride Evan’s bike, with his prototype attached, soon after I return later in January. I’ll post about it on my blog and I will let you know what I think about it as well.
Great show as always.
